SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Senior Annie Pinault (Framingham, Mass.) scored her game-high fourth goal of the contest with just 1:33 left in regulation Tuesday night to break a 12-all tie and lift Plymouth State University to a 13-12 victory over Springfield College in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Benedum Field.
The Panthers posted their fourth straight win and improved to 4-1 overall, while the Pride drop to 4-2.
Seniors Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) and Meg Cupoli (Southboro, Mass.) were also big contributors for the Panthers. MacDonald captured 10 draw controls and picked up six ground balls in addition to scoring three goals and Cupoli collected eight ground balls while adding two goals and four assists.
The Pride opened the game on a 4-1 run and eventually led 7-2 with 12:24 left before halftime. The Panthers responded with four straight goals to end the half down just one (7-6).
The second stanza was back-and-forth, and Springfield went up 11-9 with 9:51 left in regulation. Plymouth State responded with four of the game's final five goals, one each by MacDonald and Cupoli and the final two by Pinault.
Senior Rachel Lampros (Boxborough, Mass.) scored three goals and added two assists for the Pride. Freshman Alexandra Bazzano (Newington, Conn.) chipped in with three goals, senior Ashley Martell (Billerica, Mass.) added two goals and three assists, and seniors Lisa Thomas (Whitman, Mass.) and Kerrigan Murphy (Hamden, Conn.) each contributed with two scores.
Junior goalkeeper Suzie Lilakos (Stratham, N.H.) recorded 10 saves for Plymouth State, and freshman Lauren McAuley (Yorktown, N.Y.) stopped 12 shots in net for SC.
After initially rescheduling this Saturday's Little East Conference opener against Western Connecticut, slated to be played at The Holderness School (N.H.), the game has now been postponed and will be made up later in the season. PSU now returns to action Sunday with a non-conference affair at Bowdoin College (1:00 p.m.)
