Eastern Connecticut defeats PSU Womens Lax
MANSFIELD, Conn. - Defending Little East Conference champion Eastern Connecticut State University scored 10 straight goals to close out the first half with a 12-2 lead, and the Warriors went on to defeat Plymouth State University, 20-5, in a women's lacrosse conference match-up at the ECSU Outdoor Complex.
Junior Melissa Dark (Peterborough, N.H.) scored for PSU less than four minutes into the game to make it a 2-1 score, but that ended up as the only Panther goal in the first half. Eastern rattled off 10 in a row, including three each by senior Megan Gloster (Agawam, Mass.) and sophomore Brooke Wayte (Bellport, N.Y.)
Sophomore Taylor Cambal (West Yarmouth, Mass.) got the Panthers going with a goal in the opening minute of the second half, but Eastern came back with four straight goals, including two by junior Sara Barrett (Bourne, Mass.), to take a 16-2 lead. Cambal scored two more goals for the Panthers midway through the second half, and sophomore Kalie Judd (Peabody, Mass.) tallied one with about two minutes remaining.
Cambal led the Panthers with five draw controls, and Judd finished with four draw controls and a team-high three ground balls. Senior goalie Sarah Beebe (Rumson, N.J.) had a busy day in the Panther net and finished with 18 saves.
PSU, which improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Little East games, returns to action Tuesday with a non-conference contest at Colby College (4:30 p.m.) Eastern Conn., now 5-4 overall and 3-0 in the LEC, plays a conference game Thursday at UMass Dartmouth.
