WELLESLEY, Mass. - Sophomore Jenny Holland (Bethesda, Md.) scored four goals Saturday afternoon as the Wellesley College women's lacrosse team opened the 2009 season with a 18-6 win over non-conference opponent Plymouth State University.
Joining Holland in scoring column for Wellesley was Molly Morrow (Bow, N.H.), Loretta White (Northampton, Mass.) and Kate Cushing (Danvers, Mass.) with three goals apiece. Freshmen Meredith Roy (Merrimack, N.H.) and Kayla Bolton (Beverly Hills, Mich.I) added two goals and one assist apiece. Rounding out the Wellesley offense, Caitlin Meeker (Columbia, Md.) had a goal and an assist.
Juniors Kalie Judd (Peabody, Mass.) and Taylor Cambal (West Yarmouth, Mass.) led the way for the visitors with two goals apiece, with Judd adding an assist and three caused turnovers. Freshman Nicole Grover (Yarmouth, Maine) and junior Kerry D'Ambroise (Lowell, Mass.) also scored goals for the Panthers with Grover also recording three ground balls.
PSU was down just two midway through the first half, 5-3, but Wellesley scored four unanswered goals to end the half with a 9-3 advantage. The Blue put the game out of reach with four straight goals to start the second half. The Blue held a 44-16 shot advantage over the Panthers while winning 19 of 26 draw controls. Wellesley also led 16-8 in ground balls.
Plymouth State freshman Nicole Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) made 19 saves in the Panther goal. Sophomore Mary Mattia (Atlanta, Ga.) made the most of her first college start, picking up nine saves to earn the victory.
The Panthers, 0-2, are off until March 16th when they travel to West Palm Beach, Florida to play an exhibition against Division II Merrimack College. Wellesley, 1-0, plays at Tufts on Wednesday, Mar. 11, at 4:30 p.m.
