Cambal leads PSU Womens Lax past RIC
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Taylor Cambal (West Yarmouth, Mass.) scored six goals and added an assist Saturday afternoon as Plymouth State University snapped a three-game losing streak in a 15-5 win over Rhode Island College in Little East Conference women's lacrosse action.
Plymouth State avenged last year's contest when RIC pulled out a 16-15 overtime victory for its first career win against the Panthers. Saturday's triumph moved PSU to 2-1 in conference play, 2-7 overall, while RIC dropped its eighth straight and fell to 0-3 in the LEC and 1-9 overall.
RIC got on the board first as sophomore Suany Almonte (Warwick, R.I.) took the ball at midfield and raced in for a goal at 1:35. The Panthers scored the next three goals as freshman Nicole Grover (Yarmouth, Maine), Cambal and freshman Brianna Davis (Framingham, Mass.) all tallied to make the score, 3-1, at 8:06.
The two teams played a scoreless 11:02 until Almonte set up junior Emily Conte (North Providence, R.I.) for a goal to pull the Anchorwomen within one, 3-2, at 19:26. The Panthers stormed back with five consecutive goals, led by two Davis markers, to take an 8-2 lead into halftime.
PSU freshman Jenn Foley (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored 44 seconds into the second half to make the score 9-2. Conte set up RIC freshman Ashleigh Sullivan (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) before Cambal put the game out of reach with four straight goals.
Almonte and freshman attacker Molly Voyer (Lincoln, RI) scored goals down the stretch for the hosts.
Davis finished with three goals for PSU, while Grover and junior Kalie Judd (Peabody, Mass.) added two apiece.
PSU freshman Nicole Provencher (Guilford, Conn.) made six saves to earn her second win. RIC sophomore Hilary Switzer (Woonsocket, R.I.) made 11 saves in a losing effort.
The visitors outshot RIC, 35-16, and held an advantage in ground balls, 32-23, as well.
Both teams are back on the field with LEC contests on Tuesday, Plymouth State hosting Southern Maine and Rhode Island College visiting UMass Dartmouth.
