PSU Womens Lax defeats Worcester State
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Brianna Davis (Framingham, Mass.) scored four goals and assisted on another Thursday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 15-6 victory over Worcester State College in non-conference women’s lacrosse action.
The victory was the first of the season for the Panthers (1-1) and the first in the career of PSU head coach Kristin Blanchette. Worcester State (0-1) was playing its season opener.
Davis scored three of her goals in the first 17 minutes of the first half, helping the Panthers to a 5-0 lead. PSU extended the lead to 7-0 on goals by seniors Kerry D'Amroise (Lowell, Mass.) and Kalie Judd (Peabody, Mass.) before junior Carley McIntyre (Townsend, Mass.) put the Lancers on the board with 2:21 left in the half. The teams traded goals in the last two minutes to make it an 8-2 game at halftime.
The Panthers pulled away in the second half with the first three goals and six of the first seven to take a 14-3 advantage. Worcester State came alive with three unanswered goals in a span of two minutes, 16 seconds, but that ended up as the Lancers last offense and D’Ambroise rounded out the scoring for PSU.
Davis led a balanced scoring attack for Plymouth State, as sophomore Britney Chiles (North Andover, Mass.) added three goals and D'Ambroise and sophomore Jenn Foley (Tewksbury, Mass.) contributed two goals and one assist apiece, Judd also scored twice and junior Kathryn Rogers (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and freshman Caitlin Swanson (Holderness, N.H./Plymouth Regional) chipped in with one goal each.
Judd also collected a game-high six ground balls for the Panthers. Davis registered four ground balls and three draw controls, and Chiles finished with four draw controls and three ground balls. Senior goalie Morgan Lemmon (Gilford, N.H.) made 10 saves and picked up six ground balls in a winning effort before giving way to sophomore Ally Baribault (Middle Haddam, Conn.) for the last eight minutes.
McIntyre and senior Abby Cosenza (Shrewsbury, Mass.) scored two goals each to lead the Lancers, and junior Colleen Manning (Plainville, Mass.) and freshman Mariah Messina (Townsend, Mass.) tallied one goal each. Abby Cosenza, Amanda Cosenza (Shrewsbury, Mass.), and Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, Mass.) all picked up four balls apiece.
The Panthers will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 20, with a trip to Castleton State College for a 1:00 p.m. contest. The Lancers are off for two weeks until their next game on Thursday, Mar. 25, at Rhode Island College (4:00 p.m.)
