CASTLETON, Vt. – Sophomore Brianna Davis (Framingham, Mass.) scored five unanswered goals late in the second half Saturday afternoon to lift Plymouth State University to a 14-8 come-from-behind victory over Castleton State College in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Spartan Stadium.
Castleton led the contest for the first 40 minutes, holding a 5-3 lead at intermission and a 6-3 margin just 18 seconds into the second half. PSU rallied with three straight goals, two from senior Kalie Judd (Peabody, Mass.) and one from freshman Caitlin Swanson (Holderness, N.H.) to deadlock the score at 6-6 with 20:38 on the clock.
After Castleton’s Nicole Adams (Rutland, Vt.) and Judd traded goals to tie it at 7-7, Davis rattled off five consecutive goals in less than a five-minute span, putting the Panthers ahead for good, 12-7, with six minutes remaining.
Plymouth State went on its second victory in a row to improve to 2-1 on the season, while Castleton evened its mark at 2-2.
Davis also added an assist to lead the Panthers with six points, while Judd finished with four goals and one assist and sophomore Brittney Chiles (North Andover, Mass.) chipped in three goals. Swanson and Jenn Foley (Tewksbury, Mass.) each recorded one goal and two assists in the win.
Judd was also key to the Panther transition, grabbing a team-high six ground balls, six draw controls and four caused turnovers. Sophomore Nora Regan (West Hartford, Conn.) had but one ground ball, one draw control and one caused turnover, but was instrumental in shutting out Castleton’s leading scorer Mare VanDerKar (Manchester, Vt.) without a point. Senior goalie Morgan Lemmon (Gilford, NH) stopped eight shots in the win.
Adams led the Spartan attack with three goals and two assists and Pearce scored a pair of goals. Elizabeth Haggerty (Conterport, N.Y.), Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, Conn.) and Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) each had one goal in the loss. VanDerKar, although held scoreless, did provide a team-high four ground balls and caused a pair of Panther turnovers. Rebecca Duszak (Erieville, N.Y.) made nine saves in net for the Spartans.
Castleton returns to action on Monday at 6:00 p.m. when the Spartans play host to Skidmore in non-conference action. The Panthers travel to Framingham State on Tuesday, first draw scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
