PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The Plymouth State University women’s lacrosse team will make its first post-season appearance in three years this weekend after receiving an invitation Monday to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III New England Tournament.
The Panthers were selected as the #2 seed in this year’s four-team tourney, and will host the semifinal and championship games this Saturday and Sunday (May 15-16) at Arold Field. Plymouth State will be the home team after top-seeded Mount Holyoke College opted to not serve as host.
The first semifinal on Saturday will match Plymouth State (10-5) against third-seeded Keene State College (12-5) at 1:00 p.m., with Mount Holyoke (10-6) playing fourth-seeded Husson University (11-2-1) in the second contest at 3:00 p.m. The two semifinal winners will meet Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Arold Field for the ECAC New England Championship.
Plymouth State earned its ECAC berth after capturing a piece of the Little East Conference regular season championship, sharing the title with Keene State and Eastern Connecticut State University, all with 5-1 conference records. All three co-champions were upset in the LEC Tournament as fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine captured the championship and earned the conference’s automatic NCAA berth.
Mount Holyoke finished in a tie for third place in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) while Husson won the East Division of the North Atlantic Conference and was defeated by Keuka College in the final of its conference tournament.
This will be Plymouth State’s sixth appearance in the ECAC post-season tournament. PSU first participated in the event in 1984, and then returned in 2002, 2003, 2005, and 2007, winning championships in 2003, 2005 and 2007.
The Panthers also made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2000, 2001, 2004, and 2006.
