Panthers score season-high 19 goals
WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore Caitlin Swanson (Holderness, N.H.) netted a career-best eight points with seven goals and one assist Wednesday evening to pace Plymouth State University to a 19-7 triumph over Worcester State University in non-conference women’s lacrosse action at Coughlin Field.
The Panthers (4-2) scored a season-high 19 goals, getting offense from freshman Emily Buckle (Danbury, Conn.), who recorded a hat trick, and senior Kathryn Rodgers (Wolfeboro, N.H.), junior Jenn Foley (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Marie Lander (Ossipee, N.H.),w ho all tallied two markers apiece. Rogers also finished with a trio of draw controls for PSU.
Senior Carley MacIntyre and junior Danielle Clifford both registered two goals each to lead the Lancers (0-6). Senior Karen Feeley collected a team-high three draws as Clifford sparked the defensive effort with a pair of caused turnovers.
Freshman Lorin Field (Hollis, N.H.) earned the win between the pipes for Plymouth State as she made three stops and picked up an equal number of ground balls. Field was relieved by junior Ally Baribault (Middle Haddam, Conn.) and freshman Steph Paynter (Danbury, Conn.), who both combined for five saves in the second half.
Plymouth State opened with the 6-0 lead 10 minutes into the contest before Clifford stopped the streak for the Lancers with a marker on a free position shot at 12:03. Swanson would then help the Panthers take control of the match by scoring four of PSU’s next six goals to lead at the intermission, 13-2.
After the visitors notched three consecutive goals to start off the second half, Worcester State responded with three of their own by Clifford, MacIntyre and senior Colleen Manning to trail 16-5 with 14:30 left to play. But the Panthers would put the game away with three straight from Buckle, Lander and Swanson.
Both teams return to conference play this weekend. Worcester State will try to get its first win of the season against Becker on Saturday at noon while Plymouth State will travel to UMass Dartmouth Friday for a 6:00 p.m. road game.
