PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Three Plymouth State University spring sport student-athletes were honored Monday when the Little East Conference (LEC) announced this week's slate of weekly honors.
PSU senior Rew Wilson (Niantic, Conn./East Lyme) was selected LEC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week, and sophomore Amy MacDonald (Hull, Mass.) and senior Caitlin Swanson (Holderness, N.H./Plymouth) were named LEC Women's Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively.
A 6'1", 205-pound right-hander, Wilson earned a save and a win in PSU's LEC doubleheader sweep of Western Connecticut, pitching eight shutout innings in relief and allowing just one infield hit and one walk while striking out 11. He worked two-and-a-third innings of hitless relief in the opener to post his first save of the season, and he pitched five-and-two-thirds innings of one-hit, no-walk relief in the nightcap, striking out nine.
Wilson has a 3-2 record with a 2.38 earned run average and a team-high 33 strikeouts and just six walks in 34 innings. He ranks fifth in the LEC in ERA, tied for second in strikeouts and tied for third in wins. Opponents are batting just .175 against Wilson, second lowest in the LEC.
The PSU baseball team (12-8 overall, 3-1 LEC) is back on the diamond Wednesday with a non-conference clash at Salem State University. The Panthers also have home doubleheaders Saturday against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and Sunday vs. Lyndon State College.
A 5'3" sophomore attacker, MacDonald recorded 15 points with eight goals and seven assists in a 2-1 week for PSU (1-0 LEC). She tallied the game-tying goal late in regulation and the game-winning goal in the second overtime in PSU's 16-15 win at Connecticut College. MacDonald notched three goals and three assists with seven ground balls in PSU's 18-4 LEC win Saturday at UMass Dartmouth.
A starter in all seven games this season, MacDonald is second on the team in scoring with 16 goals, 13 assists and 29 points. She ranks third in the LEC in assists per game, eighth in points per game, and tied for first with two game-winning goals.
A 5'5" senior midfielder, Swanson recorded a total of 11 draw controls, nine ground balls and four caused turnovers in PSU's 2-1 week. She tallied two caused turnovers, five draw controls and four ground balls while helping PSU allow just four goals in an LEC win Saturday at UMass Dartmouth. Swanson also contributed to the offensive rush with 12 points.
The returning LEC Midfielder of the Year, Swanson has excelled at both ends of the field. She is second on the team with 20 goals scored, second with 16 draw controls, tied for second with 21 ground balls, and third with 10 caused turnovers. She is ranked ninth in the LEC in goals per game and tied for fifth in ground balls per game.
