PSU Women’s Lax too strong for Ferrum (Va.)
Panthers post first win of season on Southern trip
FERRUM, Va. – Freshman Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) scored four goals and picked up a game-high six ground balls Wednesday afternoon to lead Plymouth State University to a 16-6 non-conference women's lacrosse win over Ferrum College at Penn-Roediger Field.
The Panthers also got three goals and three assists from junior Amy MacDonald (Hull, Mass.) and three goals from junior Molly Gleason (Haverhill, Mass.) to post their first win of the season (1-2). Ferrum had a five-game winning streak stopped and fell to 5-4.
PSU led 2-1 after the first 13 minutes of action before the Panthers scored the last five goals of the first half to take a 7-1 lead into the break. Six different Panthers found the net in the opening 30 minutes, with MacDonald scoring twice.
Ferrum scored the first goal of the second half but PSU tallied the next four, including two by Vonachen, to make it 11-2, and the Panthers controlled the score the rest of the way.
Senior Lorin Field (Hollis, N.H.) Field played 51:41 in net for Plymouth State with seven saves. Amanda Cheney played all 60 minutes between the pipes for Ferrum, making eight stops.
PSU will be right back on the field Thursday with a 6:00 p.m. contest at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C.
