PSU Women’s Lacrosse downs Meredith (N.C.) for second straight win

Vonachen, MacDonald lead Panthers on Southern trip

            RALEIGH, N.C. – Freshman Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Amy MacDonald (Hull, Mass.) combined for nine goals and three assists Thursday evening as Plymouth State University defeated Meredith College, 15-9, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game.

            Vonachend tallied a game-high five goals while MacDonald added four goals and three assists for the Panthers. Vonachen also collected five ground ball and two draw controls as the Panthers won their second straight game to even their record at 2-2.

            Freshmen Jordyn Godfrey (Glenville, N.Y.) and Kaitlyn Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) also contributed to the PSU offense with three points apiece, Godfrey with three goals and Wilder with two goals and an assist .

            Sophomore Katie Burnet led the Avenging Angels with four goals, three draw controls and four caused turnovers. Meredith dropped to 8-3 with the loss.

            PSU took a 5-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of the game as MacDonald and Godfrey scored two goals apiece.  Meredith broke through and scored three of the next four to cut the margin to 6-3, but MacDonald and Vonachen answered for PSU to push the lead back to five goals. The Panthers took a 10-5 lead into the intermission.

            A determined Meredith squad came out of the break with an early goal, and hung tough the rest of the game. The Avenging Angels scored back-to-back goals late in the second half to cut the deficit to 12-9, but PSU closed out the game with three unanswered goals by MacDonald, Wilder and Vonachen to clinch the win.

            Sophomore Molly Gleason (Haverhill, Mass.) also filled up the stat sheet for PSU with nine draw controls, five ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior goalie Lorin Field (Hollis, N.H.) made 10 saves and picked up five ground balls to post the win in goal.

            PSU returns to New England and will be back in action next Thursday, Mar. 27, at Castleton State College for a 4:00 p.m. opening draw.
