Owls snap Panthers' 14-game LEC win streak
NEW HAMPTON, N.H. – Sophomore Kaitlin Nolan scored the go-ahead goal with 10:26 to play Thursday evening as Keene State College pulled out a 9-6 victory over Plymouth State University in a battle of Little East Conference unbeaten women's lacrosse teams in a game played at the New Hampton School.
The Owls, who have won five in a row, are now 9-3 overall and 4-0 against the Little East. Plymouth State had a seven-game winning streak snapped and dips to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in the LEC. PSU had also won 14 straight LEC regular season contests dating back to 2012.
Nolan's goal came just two minutes after PSU battled from behind with consecutive goals by freshman Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Amy MacDonald (Hull, Mass.) to tie the game at 6-6 with 12:22 to play.
The Panthers got their six goals from six different players. Junior Molly Gleason (Haverhill, Mass.) had another outstanding day on draws, collecting 10 draw controls as PSU dominated the draws, winning 14 of 17.
Jenna Bellano led the Owls with three goals while Nolan and Polly Grey tallied two apiece. Senior Ashley Borjeson was a menace on defense with five caused turnovers and five ground balls.
The game was close the entire way. The teams were tied at 1-1, 2-2 and 3-3 in the first half before Bellano scored for Keene State with 27 seconds left in the half to give the Owls a 4-3 lead at the break.
Julie Trombetta scored on a free position shot to open the second-half scoring for KSC, but junior Rachel Fistori (Medford, Mass.) answered with a beautiful end-to-end run for PSU and finishing it with a goal to pull the Panthers to within a goal at 5-4. Christa Demovellan pushed Keene State's lead back to two, but MacDonald set up Vonachen and then scored the tying goal to make it 6-6 with 12 minutes to go. But that turned out to be the last PSU score.
After Nolan tallied to go-ahead goal with 10:26 on the clock. she added an insurance goal with two minutes to go and Grey rounded out the scoring in the final seconds.
Erin Taylor captured the win in the Keene State goal with eight saves. PSU senior goalie Lorin Field (Hollis, N.H.) made 12 saves at the other end of the field.
Both teams play LEC road games on Saturday as Keene State travels to UMass Dartmouth and Plymouth State visits Western Connecticut State University for a 12 noon start.
