Panthers earn first win under interim coach Abby Burbank
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Junior Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) scored five goals and added an assist and also collected seven draw controls Wednesday afternoon to lead the Plymouth State University women's lacrosse team to an 11-6 victory over Salve Regina University in non-conference action at Gaudet Field. Both teams are now 1-1 on the season.
The outcome marked the first victory for PSU under interim head coach Abby Burbank. Plymouth State went 27-9 under Burbank during her first stint with the Panthers in 1999-2000.
Vonachen scored her first three goals in the first half to help the Panthers to a 6-1 lead. Salve came back with the last two goals of the first half and the first two of the second half to cut the margin to 6-5, but after the teams traded goals, PSU closed out the win with four unanswered markers over the final 20 minutes.
Sophomore Megan Tingley (Natick, Mass.) registered a goal and two assists to help the Panther offense, along with three draw controls and four caused turnovers. Freshman Sarah Thompson (Hooksett, N.H./Central) added a goal and an assist, and freshman Alexa Luponio (Southington, Conn.), sophomores Sam Sullivan (Canton, Mass.) and Caity O'Leary (Gloucester, Mass.) and junior Kaitlyn Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) also scored one each for the winners.
Junior Meg Brault (South Windsor, Conn.) earned the win in the Panther goal, making 12 saves on 18 shots. Katie Jones made 14 saves for Lasell.
Plymouth State will be back in action next week with three games on the team's Spring Break trip to Puerto Rico. The Panthers will face Lasell College on Monday, Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday, and Franklin & Marshall on Thursday.
