Dale leads strong defensive effort for Panthers

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Plymouth State University wrapped a 11-2 run around halftime to claim a 15-4 victory over Norwich University Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference women's lacrosse matchup at Sabine Field.

Junior Becky Dale (Keene, N.H.) led the way as the Panthers had an outstanding defensive effort; Plymouth State limited the Cadets to just four goals, the lowest output against PSU since a 16-4 win at Colby-Sawyer College a year ago. Junior netminder Meg Brault (South Windsor, Conn.) turned away two shots on four attempts in the first half before freshman Emilee Wargo (Madison, Conn.) filled in between the pipes in the second half, allowing just two goals in the stanza.

Sophomore Megan Tingley (Natick, Mass.) led the Panthers with six points on a goal and five assists, all in the first half, while junior Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) collected five points on four goals and a pair of helpers. Sophomore Sam Sullivan (Canton, Mass.) posted three points (2g, 1a) and classmate Sophia Guerriero (Essex, Mass.) and freshman Emily Sauls (North Andover, Mass.) added a goal and an assist apiece with five additional Panthers scoring one goal each.

Freshman Kathryn Albretsen (Caldwell, N.J.) scored three of Norwich's four goals, while junior Chapel Guarnieri (Pepperell, Mass.) chipped in a goal with senior Caroline Manning (Duxbury, Mass.) picking up the assist on the play. Freshman Danille Boucher (South Burlington, Vt.) made her collegiate debut in the Cadets goal and finished with two saves on 13 shots before classmate Janice Bolton (Stow, Mass.) jumped in between the pipes midway through the first half, collecting two saves on six shots.

Both teams got on the board in the first two minutes of the opening draw before the Panthers scored six straight for the 7-1 lead at just under the halfway mark of the first half. Tingley had a goal and four assists in the Panther rally, and Vonachen tallied four goals.PSU scored the last three goals of the first half to lead 11-2 at the break, and emptied the bench in the second half to get game experience for everyone on the roster.

Plymouth State (5-2) hosts UMass Dartmouth in its home opener on Saturday in the Little East Conference season debut at the Holderness School at 1:00 p.m. Norwich (3-3, 0-1 GNAC) is right back in action on Saturday, April 2 when it hosts Rivier University for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup at 1 p.m.
