Salem State rallies to defeat PSU Women’s Lacrosse

Sullivan, Vonachen scored four goals each for Panthers

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Salem State University scored four consecutive goals in the last four minutes of the game Thursday afternoon, including three by junior Carolyn Woodin (Arlington, Mass.), and the Falcons rallied for a 13-12 victory over Plymouth State University in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Arold Field.

            PSU led 12-9 late in the second half when Woodin scored with 4:03 on the clock to cut the margin to two goals. Freshman Bridget Lawless (Swampscott, Mass.) brought the Vikings to within one goal with 1:19 remaining, with an assist from sophomore Courtney Smith (Peabody, Mass.). Woodin then scored the tying goal on a free position shot with 53 seconds remaining, and fired in the unassisted game-winner with 34 seconds to play.

            Salem State led 4-2 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, but PSU rattled off five unanswered goals in the next five minutes to take a 7-4 lead, and went to the intermission holding an 8-5 advantage. The Panthers led 10-5 early in the second half before Salem State scored four of the next five goals to cut PSU's lead to 11-9. The home team scored one more goal with 10 minutes remaining, but Salem State pulled out the win in the final four minutes.

            Senior Kristina Conlon (Dracut, Mass.) led the visitors with five points on three goals and two assists, while Woodin and senior Erin Riley (Wakefield, Mass.) contributed three goals apiece and Lawless and Smith added two goals each. Riley collected a game-high six draw controls, junior Katie Hart (Beverly, Mass.) picked up a team-high five ground balls and added a team-best three caused turnovers.

            Junior Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Sam Sullivan (Canton, Mass.) topped the home team with four goals each, while sophomore Megan Tingley (Natick, Mass.) added a goal and two assists and junior Kaitlyn Wilder (Framingham, Mass.) a goal and an assist. Freshman Kimmie Zuccaro (Townsend, Mass.) recorded a team-leading four draw controls, and freshman Emily Sauls (North Andover, Mass.) contributed three ground balls and two draw controls.

            Senior Jenn Toussaint (Reading, Mass.) earned the win in the Salem State goal, making 16 saves. Junior Meg Brault (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshman Emilee Wargo (Madison, Conn.) split time in the PSU net, with Brault making eight saves on 16 shots in 46 minutes, and Wargo suffering the loss with three saves on eight shots in 14 minutes.

            PSU is back in action next Tuesday, Apr. 19, with a 4:00 p.m. home game against defending Little East Conference Tournament champion Keene State College. Salem State plays a MASCAC contest Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Fitchburg State University.
