PSU Women’s Lacrosse rolls past R.I. College for eighth straight win

Team effort leads Panthers to Little East victory

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Eleven different players scored goals Sunday afternoon as Plymouth State University used a team effort to defeat Rhode Island College, 16-0, in a Little East Conference women's lacrosse game at Arold Field.

            Junior Sam Sullivan (Canton, Mass.) led the barrage for PSU with three goals and one assist, while three other Panthers tallied two goals apiece -- junior Megan Tingley (Natick, Mass.), sophomore Sarah Thompson (Hoooksett, N.H.) and freshman Meg McAndrew (South Windsor, Conn.). PSU out-shot the visitors by a 30-3 count.

            Plymouth State extended its winning streak to eight games, improving to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in the Little East. RIC dropped to 2-11 overall and 0-5 in LEC play. PSU is tied with Eastern Connecticut for first place in the Little East with two games to play in the regular season.

GAME NOTES

* PSU took control of the game from the get-go and never let up. Sullivan, Tingley, freshman Sam Fiore (West Newbury, Mass.) and junior Sophia Guerriero (Essex, Mass.) put in goals for the home team in the first five minutes, and Sullivan, senior Caroline Vonachen (Framingham, Mass.) and Thompson made it 7-0 before the game was 10 minutes old.

* McAndrew scored twice in the last 10 minutes of the first half and sophomore Kimmie Zuccaro (Townsend, Mass.) and Sullivan added one each as the Panthers led 11-0 at the break.

* Highlighting the second half scoring for PSU were the first goals of the season for juniors Caity O'Leary (Gloucester, Mass.) and Haley Brook (South Sutton, N.H.), while freshman Lissa Perry (Salem, N.H.) chipped in with two assists.

* Zuccaro filled up the stat sheet for PSU, collecting five ground balls, four draw controls and three caused turnovers. Tingley also contributed four draw controls and three caused turnovers.

* RIC was led by junior Toni Montanaro (Cranston, R.I.), who picked up a team-high five ground balls. Sophomore goalie Julia Eaton (Cumberland, R.I.) had a busy day and finished with eight saves, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

 

UP NEXT:

* Both teams wrap up the regular season this week with two games each. PSU visits rival Keene State on Wednesday for the rematch of last year's LEC Championship game before hosting conference co-leader Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday, while RIC hosts UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before its final non-conference game on Saturday vs Elms College (4 p.m.)
