Sullivan posts career high nine points as Panthers move to 4-0 in LEC
DANBURY, Conn. – Senior Sam Sullivan (Canton, Mass.) scored a game-high six goals and added three assists to lead Plymouth State University to a 20-9 win over Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) women's lacrosse game at the WAC on Saturday afternoon.
After giving up an early goal, the Panthers scored ten in a row and never looked back. Plymouth State (10-3, 4-0 LEC) has won seven straight games and is the only remaining undefeated team in LEC play. The Colonials fall to 3-11 (0-4 LEC).
After sophomore Brooke Baldelli (New Fairfield, Conn.) put the Colonials ahead early in the first half the Panther offense erupted for seven goals in a 5:30 span. Sullivan scored a pair of goals 27 seconds apart and senior Megan Tingley (Natick, Mass.) notched her first of the game less than a minute later to put the Panthers ahead 3-1. Junior Veronyca Daniels (Concord, N.H.) added a goal 18 seconds later. Tingley scored on a free position shot, then Sullivan and Tingley both found the back of the cage to push the lead to 7-1. Sophomore Sam Fiore (Merrimac, Mass.) and junior Kimberly Zuccaro (Townsend, Mass.) both scored and Sullivan netted her fourth of the game with 15:30 left in the half to put the visitors ahead 10-1.
Baldelli broke the string with an unassisted goal, but sophomore Sydney Dubois (Goffstown, N.H.) and Sullivan combined for three more Plymouth goals as the Panthers rolled to a 13-2 lead. Baldelli added two more scores, including one just before the half ended, to cut the deficit to 13-4 at the half.
PSU scored the first four goals of the second half, two from Daniels around goals from Zuccaro and Tingley, as the lead ballooned to 17-4 in the first five minutes. The teams traded goals over the next 14 minutes until a pair of WCSU tallies accounted for the 20-9 final.
Sullivan's nine points were a career high. Tingley added four goals and an assist, while Zuccaro (three goals, one assist) and Daniels (three goals) each recorded hat tricks. Dubois chipped in with two goals and an assist and Fiore added a goal and four helpers.
Senior Clarissa Foote (Weare, N.H.) improved to 9-3 while making four saves over her 49:01 in goal, with junior Emilee Wargo (Madison, Conn.) coming on in relief. Dubois led the team with nine draw controls, with senior Sophia Guerriero (Essex, Mass.) adding eight as PSU held a 22-8 advantage as a team. Zuccaro and freshman Faye Brown (Londonderry, N.H.) each recorded three caused turnovers.
Baldelli provided the bulk of the Western Connecticut offense scoring five goals. Junior Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, Conn.) added a goal and five helpers, while leading the Colonials with four ground balls and four draw controls. Freshman Jennifer Sawicki (Westbury, N.Y.) made seven saves but dropped to 3-11 on the year.
Plymouth State will celebrate Senior Day on Tuesday (Apr. 24), when the Panthers host LEC foe the University of Southern Maine. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
