Arbogast earns All-America Wrestling Honor at NCAAs

EWING, N.J. - A Plymouth State College wrestler has earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament, hosted by The College of New Jersey, by virtue of finishing in the top eight in his weight class.

Sophomore Brent Arbogast (Nashua, NH) became the 10th wrestler in school history, and ninth this decade, to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. Arbogast finished eighth in the 141-pound weight class, dropping a decision (by medical forfeit) to Rick Healey of Loras College. The PSC wrestler posted a 3-2 record in the two-day tournament, completing his All-America season with a 33-7 record.

PSC, which sent a school-record four wrestlers to the championships, had its other three individuals eliminated during Friday's rounds. Senior Ryan Carr (Salem, NH) in the heavyweight division, senior Todd Oljey (Byfield, MA) at 149 pounds, and junior Ben Baker (Gardiner, ME) at 174 pounds each won at least one match before being eliminated.

The Plymouth State contingent, led by head coach Dave Carlson, scored 14.5 points and placed 22nd out of the 66 teams. Arbogast was defeated in the first round by second-seeded Nick Mitchell of Wartburg College (Iowa), 11-3, but was awarded a victory by default over Bill Holsiner of Muhlenberg (Pa.) in the first wrestleback. Arbogast then advanced with a medical forfeit over top-seeded Florian Ghinea of Montclair State (NJ), but defaulted to Jerry Reynolds of SUNY Brockport to move into the 7th/8th place match against Healey.

Carr captured a 9-6 upset victory over seventh-seeded Rob Cosper of Lycoming (Pa.) in the first round, but was pinned in 2:42 by Ryan Collins of Capital (Ohio) in the quarterfinals. Carr was then eliminated in an 11-4 decision to eighth-seeded Chris O'Rear of Wartburg in his first wrestleback. Carr wraps up an outstanding campaign with a 33-7 record, and caps off his career with a 84-33 mark.

Oljey also pulled an upset victory in his first round match, defeating 10th-seeded Andy Faust of Muhlenberg, 14-6. Oljey then ran into second-seeded Ben Shane of Wartburg in the next round, and got pinned in 2:02. Oljey's tournament came to an end in the first wrestleback, as he dropped a 7-1 decision to Doug Maritato of York College. Oljey completes his season with a 23-11 record, and a 75-43 career mark.

Baker was handed a 5-4 defeat in his first-round bout against seventh seeded Ben Jobgen of Wartburg, but he rebounded to register a 17-9 decision over Thor Arland of St. Olaf College (Minn.) in a wrestleback. Baker then earned a medical forfeit over fourth-seeded Dan Perry of Oneonta State (NY), but his night came to an end in the next wrestleback with a 5-3 loss to sixth seeded Sevond Cole of Buena Vista College. Baker concludes the season with a 24-11 record.
