BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Plymouth State University finished in 11th place among 15 schools Sunday at the New England College Conference Wrestling Association's Dual Meet Championships, hosted by Bridgewater State College.
The Panthers split four matches on the day. PSU dropped its opening bout to Norwich University, 37-7, but came back in the next match to defeat the University of Southern Maine, 36-15. Plymouth State then dropped a close match to Roger Williams, 23-18, before wrapping up the day with a 41-6 victory over Williams. The 2-2 record for the day leaves PSU with a 6-7 mark on the season.
The PSU-Roger Williams match was particularly close, as each team won five matches, but RWU registered two pins and a technical fall and PSU had just one pin. Earlier this year, PSU had defeated Roger Williams 24-18. The Panthers evened the score against Williams, though, avenging an earlier 33-12 decision.
Plymouth State placed 10th at last year's Dual Meet Championships, then went on to finish third at the Annual New England Championships.
Seniors Nate Kittredge (Vergennes, Vt.) and Shaun Cleary (West Keansburg, N.J.) were the top Panther wrestlers on Sunday. Kittredge was a perfect 4-0 at 174 pounds to improve his season record to 17-2, and Cleary went 3-0 at 141 pounds to up his mark to 15-5.
Junior Dan Moskowitz (Amherst, N.H.) and sophomore Dean Miller (Long Valley, N.J.) each won three times in four bouts for the Panthers, Moskowitz at 149 pounds to improve to his record to 18-6 and Miller at 165 to improve to 10-9. Freshman Brandon Black (Keene, N.H.) earned decisions in two out of three at 157 to move to 18-7 and tie Moskowitz for the team lead in victories.
Freshman 125-pounder Matt Friend (Jefferson, N.H.) and junior 133-pounder David Preciado (Stoneham, Mass.) each split their four matches on the afternoon for PSU. Senior Mike Marcotte (Bedford, N.H.) earned a pin in his only match at 157, and freshman Stephen Stoddard (Glenndale, Md.) had one win in three tries at 197 and heavyweight.
PSU returns home to host WPI Thursday in a dual match at Foley Gymnasium (7:00 p.m.).
