PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Worcester Polytechnic Institute won the first five matches Thursday night and went on to defeat Plymouth State University in a college wrestling match at Foley Gymnasium, 31-7.
The Engineers, who are ranked fifth in New England, improve to 10-4 on the season, while PSU drops to 6-8.
WPI jumped ahead 22-0 on wins by junior Dave Capone (Lincoln, R.I.) at 184 pounds, junior Mike Donofrio (Northboro, Mass.) at 197, sophomore Tom Lashmit (Marlboro, Mass.) at heavyweight, senior Anthony Paoletta (Danville, N.H.) at 125, and senior DeShawn Fentress (Brockton, Mass.) at 133.
PSU got on the board with victories by senior Shaun Cleary (West Keansburg, N.J.) at 141 pounds and junior Dan Moskowitz (Amherst, N.H.) at 149, but the visitors closed out the match with decisions by junior Joe Moskowitz (Amherst, N.H.) at 157, freshman Mike Kennedy (Ringwood, N.J.) at 165, and junior Peter Krzyzewski (Kingston, Mass.) at 174.
Two matches were particularly interesting. At 157, PSU freshman Brandon Black (Keene, N.H.) took a 5-0 lead over Joe Moskowitz, the defending New England champion at 157, but Moskowitz came back to earn an 8-5 decision. The 174-pound bout featured the defending New England champion Krzyzewski against PSU senior Nate Kittredge (Vergennes, Vt.), the defending champ at 184, with Krzyzewski handing Kittredge only his third loss of the season in 20 decisions.
The Panthers are back in action this Saturday in a dual at Bridgewater State. WPI returns home to host a meet Saturday between members of the Metro Conference vs. the New England Conference.
