Moseley leads PSU Wrestlers at RIT Tournament

- The Plymouth State University wrestling team finished in 13th place among 18 schools Saturday at the 39th Annual RIT Invitational Wrestling Tournament, hosted by the Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Panthers scored 31.5 points to finish 13th, just behind Coast Guard (37.5 points) and ahead of Waynesburg (29.5).  Johnson & Wales University won the event with 118 points, and Wilkes (101.5) edged Cortland (98.5) for second place.  Four of the 18 teams placed in the top 20 at last year's NCAA Division III Championships.

Freshman Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H./Concord HS/Tilton Prep) was the top performer for the Panthers, finishing in sixth place at 133 pounds.  The sixth seed in the bracket, Moseley suffered a first-round loss but rebounded with four straight victories in the consolation draw.  After a loss to the fourth-seed, Moseley won the fifth-place bout over second-seeded Brian Zane of Norwich.  Moseley, who also placed second at 133 in the Oneonta (N.Y.) State Invitational two weeks ago, is now a team-leading 8-3 on the season.

While Moseley was the only place-winner for the Panthers, several others turned in solid performances.  Five Panthers collected two wins apiece and finished the tournament with 2-2 records - freshman Corey Betty (Lowell, Mass.) at 125 pounds, junior Matt Friend (Jefferson, N.H.) at 133, freshmen B.J. Allen (Derry, N.H.) and Devon Hanson (Sanbornton, N.H.) at 141, and sophomore Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) at 285.

In addition, senior Nick Gurney (Dixfield, Maine) pulled a first-round upset of the fifth seed at 184 pounds before losing two straight, and freshman Zeth Nolda (East Lyme, Conn.) won a consolation match at 149 pounds.

PSU, 1-0 in dual meets, is back in action next Saturday in a tri-meet at Western New England College with Roger Williams University (10:00 a.m.)
