PSU Wrestling edged by Rhode Island College
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Plymouth State University won six of the 10 bouts Wednesday evening, but Rhode Island College recorded three pins among its four victories and defeated the Panthers, 21-20, in a collegiate wrestling match at Foley Gymnasium.
RIC, which is ranked ninth in New England, improves to 2-0 in dual matches, while PSU, ranked 10th in New England, is now 0-2.
Freshman Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.) won the opening bout at 149 pounds to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead. RIC captured the next three matches to take a 15-4 lead, with sophomore Mike Martini (Cranston, R.I.) earning a decision at 157 pounds and senior Arty Privedenyuk (Springfield, Mass.) and sophomore Brendan Casey (Lowell, Mass.) winning by fall at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively.
PSU rebounded with three straight decisions by junior Landon Nelson (Salem, N.Y.) at 184, freshman Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 197, and sophomore Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) at 285 to make it 15-13 RIC.
RIC sophomore Steve Goncalves (Cumberland, R.I.) won by fall at 125 pounds to give the Anchormen a 21-13 advantage. Senior Matt Friend (Jefferson, N.H.) and sophomore Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H.) earned wins for PSU at 133 and 141, respectively, but the Panthers fell a point short.
PSU is back in action Saturday at the Ted Reese Invitational at the University of Southern Maine (10:00 a.m.) RIC is headed to the RIT Invitational Saturday in Rochester, N.Y. (9:30 a.m.)
