PSU Wrestlers go 1-3 against tough competition at North-South Duals

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Plymouth State University wrestling team faced some of the toughest competition in the country Saturday afternoon, and finished with a 1-3 record in the North-South Duals, hosted by Ursinus College.

The Panthers started the day with a 32-3 loss to The College of New Jersey, which is ranked eighth in the nation in Division III. Next came a 31-9 defeat to Wilkes College, which is ranked 11th in the country. After a 27-13 setback to Ursinus, which placed 30th at the NCAA's last year, Plymouth State finished the day with a 30-21 victory over MIT.

The three Panther losses come to teams that are a combined 19-2. Ursinus is undefeated at 7-0, while TCNJ and Wilkes are both 6-1. Plymouth State is now 2-6 on the season, and MIT is 0-6.

The event's schedule was changed at the start of the day, when York College did not participate, and PSU faced MIT instead of Wartburg, which is the defending national champion.

Freshmen Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.) and Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) turned in the top performances for Plymouth State. Laganas rebounded from a loss in the TCNJ match with three straight victories at 149 pounds, while St. Ours went 3-0 on the day at 197 pounds, including PSU's only decision over TCNJ and a win by fall over his Ursinus opponent. St. Ours owns the best individual record on the team with a 12-2 mark, while Laganas is second-best with a 10-5 mark.

Sophomore Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H.) also picked up two wins at 141 pounds, including one by forfeit. Single wins were recorded by junior Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 157, freshman Donny Connolly (Plaistow, N.H./Timberlane) at 165, junior Landon Nelson (Salem, N.Y.) at 197, and Steve Parigian (Braintree, Mass.) at 285.

PSU resumes competition on Sunday, Jan. 14, with the annual PSU Invitational at Foley Gymnasium (10:00 a.m.)
