PSU Wrestlers fall to Southern Maine in dual match
GORHAM, Maine - Junior captain Shane Stephenson (West Salem, Ohio) earned a key pin at 174-pounds Wednesday evening to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 31-17 win over the Plymouth State University Panthers at Hill Gymnasium.
The Huskies, ranked seventh in New England Division III, improves to 8-3 overall. The eight wins in dual meet action is the highest total in the program's nine-year varsity history. Plymouth State, ranked 10th in New England, drops to 2-7 overall.
USM sophomore Steve Valastro (Montgomery, N.Y.) won by fall at 141 pounds to give the host Huskies the early 6-0 lead. PSU came back to take a 9-6 advantage on a decision by freshman Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.) at 149 and a decision by classmate Bobby Murray (Salem, N.H.) at 157.
The Huskies took the next four bouts to take a 25-9 lead, with junior Mark Moyer (Somerville, N.J.) winning by decision at 165, Stephenson and sophomore Matt Andrikut (Slate Hill, N.Y.) recording pins at 174 and 197, and freshman Pat Hogan (Cranford, N.J.) earning a major decision at 184.
PSU salvaged victories at 285 and 125, as junior Shaun Wilbert (Toms River, N.J.) earned a win at heavyweight and freshman Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) won by fall in the lightest weight class. USM freshman Matt Ulrich (Garfield, N.J.) wrapped up the match win a pin at 133.
Both teams are back on the match this Sunday (Jan. 21) at the New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) Dual Meet Championships, hosted by Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Mass. Matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
