PSU Wrestlers defeat WPI in dual match
WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshmen Joe McGowan (Lincolnville, Maine) and Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.), and junior Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) all registered pins Wednesday evening to help Plymouth State University defeat Worcester Polytechnic Institute 26-20 in college wrestling action.
Both teams won five individual bouts in the match, but Plymouth State earned the victory with three pins and two major decisions while WPI recorded three decisions, a pin and a technical fall. The Panthers, who defeated the Engineers 28-20 last Sunday at the NECCWA Duals Tournament, improve to 5-9 while WPI dips to 5-11.
After Carl Anderson (Billerica, Mass.) won the first bout for WPI at 125 pounds, McGowan gave PSU the lead with a pin at 133. Roman Walsh (Wilmington, Mass.) tallied a technical fall at 141 pounds, but the Panthers took control of the match with three straight victories - a major decision from Bobby Murray (Salem, N.H.) at 149 pounds and pins from Laganas and Schieding at 157 and 165, respectively.
Plymouth State clinched the match with a win at 197 by freshman Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial), who improved his record to a team-best 18-2. St. Ours is ranked third in New England at 197.
The Engineers also got victories from Larry Loomis (Plainfield, Conn.) at 174, Adam Kreitman (Salem, N.H.) at 184, and Josh Rodden (Sabina, Ohio) at 285.
Both teams return to the mats on Saturday. WPI travels to Ewing, N.J. for the NECCWA-Metro Duals where they face host College of New Jersey, Montclair State and Hunter beginning at noon. Plymouth State entertains Bridgewater State, MIT and Norwich in a quad meet also starting at noon.
