ONEONTA, N.Y. - Two Plymouth State University wrestlers placed in the top six in their respective weight classes Saturday, leading the Panthers to an eighth-place finish among 12 schools at the annual Oneonta State (N.Y.) Red Dragon Invitational.
Cortland State (N.Y.) won the all-day event, scoring 167 points, while New York University was runner-up with 133. Niagara Community College nabbed third place, followed by Oneonta State (108.5), Johns Hopkins (105.5), Southern Maine (81.5), Hunter College (72.5), Plymouth State (66.5), RIT (62), WPI (53.5), Morrisville (51.5) and Scranton (29.5). Cortland and Hunter were top-10 finishers at the NCAA Championships last season.
The top Plymouth State performances came from seniors Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial), who each placed third in their weight class. Schieding, the fourth seed in the tournament, split his first two matched in the 174-pound bracket, but won four straight bouts in the wrestleback to claim third place. The top-seeded St. Ours pinned his first two opponents in the 285-pount weight class before suffering his first loss, and bounced back with another pin and a decision to take third in his bracket.
Two other Panther wrestlers were one win away from finishing as a place-winner. Sophomore Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass.), the #3 seed at 157 pounds, split his first two bouts, and then won three in a row in the wrestlebacks before falling to the tournament's #2 seed. Senior Landon Nelson (Salem, N.Y.) split his first two matches at 174 pounds, then won two straight matches in the back draw, and was knocked out with a loss to the #7 seed.
Freshman Joey Kehoe (Cohasset, Mass.) won three of his five bouts at 157 pounds but did not place. Five other Panthers finished with 2-2 records in the tournament - sophomore Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) at 125 pounds, senior Chris Greenwood (Manchester, N.H./West) at 133, sophomore Joe McGowan (Lincolnville, Maine) at 141, sophomore Donny Connolly (Plaistow, N.H.) at 165, and freshman Jake Kniska (Colchester, Conn.) at 285.
The Panthers will be back in action with a dual match at Rhode Island College on Wednesday, Nov. 28.
