PSU Wrestlers finish 1-3 at North-South Duals

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Competing against some of the top Division III wrestling teams in the country, Plymouth State University finished with a 1-3 record Saturday at the North-South Duals, hosted by Ursinus University.

The day started for the Panthers with a 36-3 loss to The College of New Jersey, which placed fifth at the NCAA Championships last year and is currently ranked ninth in the Division III national poll.  That was followed by a 52-0 loss to Delaware Valley College, which tied for 13th at the NCAAs last year and is ranked sixth in the current national poll.

After a 40-6 setback to Ursinus, which is not ranked but went 4-0 on the day to improve to 7-0 overall, Plymouth State wrapped up the day with a 24-19 win over McDaniel College (Md.)  PSU is now 2-6-1 on the season.

Sophomore Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y./Riverhead) and junior Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H./Concord HS/Tilton Prep) each won two matches on the afternoon for the Panthers.  Wilkinson earned a decision at 125 pounds for PSU's only win in the match against TCNJ, and he added a victory against McDaniel.  Moseley was one of two Panther winners against Ursinus, capturing a decision at 141 points, and he followed that up with a pin in 35 seconds against McDaniel.

Freshman Robert Phillips (Brick, N.J.) was PSU's other winner in the Ursinus match, winning his bout at 197 pounds, and seniors Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 174, Landon Nelson (Salem, N.Y./Washington Academy) at 184, and Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 285 posted victories against McDaniel.  Freshman Adam Friend (Jefferson, N.H./White Mountain Regional) picked up a win at 149 by forfeit.

The Panthers return home to host the annual PSU Invitational next Sunday, Jan. 13, at Foley Gymnasium (10:00 a.m.)  There will be eight teams competing, with championship brackets in all 10 weight classes and a team champion.
