Five PSU Wrestlers earn All-New England honors
GORHAM, Maine - Plymouth State University had five wrestlers earn All-New England honors on Sunday, leading the Panthers to a seventh-place finish out of 15 teams at the 2008 New England Wrestling Association Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Maine.
Rhode Island College, with 121 points, edged out defending champion Johnson & Wales University (116 points) for the team championship, with Williams College third with 105.5. Springfield College (89), Bridgewater State College (80) and Roger Williams University (72) finished in the 4-5-6 spots, with PSU seventh with 61 points. Southern Maine (58.5), Wesleyan University (40.5) and the US Coast Guard Academy (36.5) rounded out the top 10.
With the solid finish for PSU, head coach Tommy Prairie (right) was voted New England Rookie Coach of the Year.
All-New England honors go to the top six wrestlers in each weight class. Four Panthers finished fifth in their respective divisions -- junior Shawn Moseley (Hooksett, N.H./Concord) at 133, senior Ryan Schieding (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 174, senior Landon Nelson (Salem, N.Y.) at 184, and senior Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 285, while sophomore Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y./Riverhead) placed sixth at 125 pounds.
Moseley (far left) finished the tournament with a 4-2 record at 133 pounds, including a victory over Andrew Armstrong of Coast Guard in the fifth/sixth place match. Moseley completes the season with a 16-8 overall record. Schieding (left) also went 4-2 in the tournament at 174 pounds, with a victory over Lawrence Loomis of WPI in the fifth/sixth place match. Schieding completes his campaign with a 23-10 record, and concludes his career with a 62-47 mark.
Nelson (near right) knocked off Alexander Whitney of Norwich in the fifth/sixth place match at 184 pounds, finishing the tournament with a 4-2 record. Nelson, who was 0-18 on the mat two years ago, completes his senior season with a 22-14 record. St. Ours (right, middle) pinned John Russo of Roger Williams University in the fifth/sixth place match, his second pin of the tournament against Russo. St. Ours completed the tournament with a 3-2 record, and concludes his season at 20-11. Wilkinson (far right) dropped the fifth/sixth place bout, finishing the tournament with a 3-3 record and concluding the campaign with a 17-14 mark.
PSU's other five entries were eliminated in Saturday's competition. Four of the Panther wrestlers - sophomore Joe McGowan (Lincolnville, Maine) at 141 pounds, and freshmen Dustin Rudy (Iselin, N.J.) at 149, Joey Kehoe (Cohasset, Mass.) at 165, and Eric Larcomb (Jefferson, N.H.) at 197, each won a consolation round match before being eliminated. Sophomore Jared Laganas (Dracut, Mass./Dracut) was knocked out with two straight losses at 157.
The Panthers, who were ranked ninth in New England coming into the tournament, finished the regular season with a 7-12-1 record in dual matches and an eighth-place in the New England Dual Meet Championships.
