NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Plymouth State University wrestling team opened the season on a strong note Wednesday evening with a 27-12 victory over Norwich University in a dual match at Andrews Hall. The Panthers won seven of the 10 matches to win their season opener for the first time since 2005.
Freshman Logan Russell (Bath, Maine) got the Panthers off to a strong start, with a technical fall at 149 pounds. Norwich came back to take the lead with wins by senior Connor Keating (Waterbury, Vt.) at 157 pounds and junior Clayton Brittingham (Snowville, Md.) at 165.
PSU took the lead for good with consecutive victories by freshman Dan Bilowus (Hazlet, N.J.) at 174 pounds, sophomore Eric Larcomb (Jefferson, N.H.) at 184 and senior Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 197. After a pin by Norwich sophomore Cody Rideout (Londonderry, N.H.) in the heavyweight division, the Panthers closed out the match with three straight four-point decisions by junior Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y./Riverhead) at 125 pounds, freshman Josh Huber (Hampton, N.H./WInnacunnet) at 133, and junior Joe McGowan (Lincolnville, Maine) at 141.
The Panthers are back on the mat Saturday with the full team competing at the annual Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College (10:00 a.m.)
