SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Plymouth State University wrestling team finished in 11th place out of 17 schools Saturday at the 19th Annual Doug Parker Wrestling Invitational, hosted by Springfield College at Blake Arena.
The Merchant Marine Academy won the event with 135 points, ahead of runner-up Springfield (124.5) and third-place Willliams (122). PSU scored 72 points and finished one spot ahead of Washington & Jefferson (55) and just behind Stevens Tech (73).
The Panthers had two wrestlers place in the top six in their weight class. Sophomore Dustin Rudy (Iselin, N.J.) took fourth place in the 165-pound weight class, and senior Josh St. Ours (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) ended up sixth in the 197-pound bracket. Rudy won his first three matches before his first loss and added another win in the back draw before being eliminated. St. Ours won his first two bouts and then won twice in the backdraw.
Freshman Cody Oliverio (Brick, N.J.) had a solid tournament for PSU, winning four bouts overall in the 157-pound bracket, including three in the consolation draw. Freshman Mike Willey (Tewksbury, Mass.) at 157 and junior Joe McGowan (Lincolnville, Maine) at 141 each collected three wins in five matches in their weight class.
Four other Panthers posted 2-2 records in the tournament -- junior Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) at 125 pounds, freshman Josh Huber (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) at 133, freshman Tyler Walengewicz (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) at 149, and freshman Jake Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) at 285.
The Panthers return to the mat when they host Rhode Island College in the home opener at Foley Gymnasium on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7:00 p.m.
