PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Rhode Island College won seven of the 10 bouts Wednesday evening and defeated Plymouth State University, 34-10, in a collegiate wrestling match at Foley Gymnasium.
The Anchormen, ranked fourth in New England, recorded three wins by fall and improved to 2-0 this season in dual matches. Plymouth State, ranked ninth in New England, had its record evened at 1-1.
Junior Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) won the first match for PSU at 125 pounds, but RIC came back with three straight victories, a pin by freshman Scott Legacy (Bennington, Vt.) at 133 and decisions by sophomores Travis Drappi (West Orange, N.J.) at 141 and Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, Pa.) at 149.
The Panthers made a slight comeback with victories at 157 pounds by freshman Cody Oliverio (Brick, N.J.) and 165 by sophomore Dustin Rudy (Iselin, N.J.), but the Anchormen won the remaining four bouts to put the match away. Junior 174-pounder Joe Manley (Wayland, Mass.) and senior 184-pounder Nick Logan (Lowell, Mass.) recorded pins, junior Ray Moore (Wrentham, Mass.) picked up a forfeit victory, and freshman Steve Saba (Methuen, Mass.) posted at decision in the heavyweight division.
Both teams will compete in tournament this Saturday, PSU at the Ted Reese Invitational at the University of Southern Maine and RIC at the RIT Invitational in Rochester, N.Y.
