PSU Wrestlers win two of three in regular season finale

            PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The Plymouth State University wrestling team completed the regular season Sunday afternoon by winning two out of three matches in a quad meet at Foley Gymnasium.

            The Panthers started the day with a 29-19 victory over Trinity College.  Then they defeated Springfield College for the first time in a dual meet, 26-18.  In the final bout of the day, PSU gave Johnson & Wales University, the top-ranked team in New England, a solid challenge in a 27-15 setback.

            Plymouth State completes the dual meet portion of the season with a 10-8 overall record.  It is the first winning season for the Panthers since finishing 9-7 in 2001-02, and the first season with at least 10 wins since going 12-6 in 1998-99.

            Freshmen Logan Russell (Bath, Maine) and Mike Willey (Tewksbury, Mass.) led the way for the Panthers with three wins apiece.  Russell posted three decisions at 149 pounds, while Willey recorded a pin against Trinity, a decision against Springfield, and an upset of New England's seventh-ranked wrestler at 157 against Johnson & Wales. Willey is now second on the team in wins with a 19-7 record.

            Senior Josh St. Ours (Auburn, N.H./Manchester Memorial) and junior Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y.) each posted 2-0 records for PSU, St. Ours at 197 and Wilkinson at 125.  St. Ours, who is ranked #2 in New England in his weight class, finishes the regular season with a team-leading 24-5 record, while Wilkinson, ranked fifth in New England, is now 17-12. Senior Chris Greenwood (Manchester, N.H./West) won two of three bouts at 133 to improve his season record to 11-10.

            Sophomores Kyle Moseley (Hooksett, N.H.) and Eric Larcomb (Jefferson, N.H.) each split matches against Trinity and Springfield at 174 and 184 pounds, respectively.  Freshman Jake Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) posted an upset win in the heavyweight division against Johnson & Wales against the fourth-ranked wrestler in New England.

            The Panthers will compete in the annual New England Championships on Feb. 21-22, hosted by Springfield College. PSU will also send a contingent to the JV New Englands next Sunday, Feb. 15, at Springfield.
