SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Plymouth State University wrestling team split its first two dual matches of the season Saturday afternoon at American International College, defeating Seton Hill University (Pa.) in the opener, 26-17, but falling to host AIC in the second match, 23-16. Each school finished 1-1 on the day as Seton Hill defeated AIC, 24-15.
Sophomores Jake Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) and Josh Huber (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) led the Panthers with two victories apiece. Gagnon pinned his Seton Hill opponent in the 285-pound weight class and posted a 6-5 decision against AIC, while Huber recorded a major decision against AIC at 133 pounds after receiving a forfeit win at 125 against Seton Hill.
The Panthers won five of the 10 bouts against Seton Hill. In addition to Gagnon and Huber, three PSU freshmen posted consecutive victories in the 141, 149 and 157 pound weight classes. Pete Bronder (North Berwick, Maine/Noble) was the winner at 141, James Matlack (Hamilton, N.J./Ewing) took his match at 149, and Seth Carter (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) earned a technical fall at 157.
Senior Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y./Riverhead) recorded a victory against AIC in his only appearance at 125 pounds, and freshman Femi Wheeler (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) pinned his AIC opponent in his collegiate debut at 149.
Plymouth State will have its home opener and only home match of the first semester this Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 6:00 p.m. at Foley Gymnasium against Norwich University.
