PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Norwich University used a pair of wins by fall to defeat Plymouth State University in a collegiate wrestling match, 21-19, Wednesday evening at Foley Gymnasium.
Each team posted five victories in the match, but the visitors won the team scoring by recording a pair of pins. PSU nearly pulled out the match in the final bout when sophomore Jake Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Memorial), needing a pin in the 285-pound weight class to give the Panthers the victory, recorded a three-point near-fall in the closing seconds but couldn't pin his opponent's shoulders to the mat, settling for a 6-1 victory.
The top performances by Norwich came from senior Nick Monaco (Nassau, N.Y.), who took four minutes and 26 seconds to pin his opponent at 141 pounds, and sophomore Ray Gauthier (York, Maine) needed only 44 seconds to record the fall at 184 pounds. Other winners for the Cadets included freshman Robert Butts (Sherman, Conn.) at 133, freshman Joey Eon (Massabesic, Maine) at 149, and senior Jordan Ferguson (Beaver Falls, N.Y.) in overtime at 197 pounds.
In addition to Gagnon, PSU got a forfeit victory at 125 pounds and decisions by sophomore Mike Willey (Tewksbury, Mass.) at 157, freshman Seth Carter (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) at 165 and freshman Jesse Bilodeau (Brandon, Vt.) at 174.
Both teams will be back on the mat this Saturday, competing at the annual Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College (10:00 a.m.)
