RIC too strong for Plymouth State Wrestling
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rhode Island College won eight of the 10 bouts Wednesday evening, capped by falls from sophomores Alex LaBeef (Pomfret, Conn.) and Mike Trasso (Lyndhurst, N.J.) as the Anchormen pinned a 34-6 decision on Plymouth State University in a New England Conference wrestling match at RIC.
The Panthers, ranked eighth in New England, got just two individual wins as freshman Seth Carter (Hudson, N.H.) won 9-7 in sudden victory at 165 pounds and sophomore Jake Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) posted a 3-2 decision in the 285-pound weight class. PSU drops to 1-3 in dual matches this season.
RIC, ranked fifth in New England, won the final four bouts to solidify the victory and improve to 1-0 by winning its home opener. Junior captain Kevin Sutherland (Dauphin, Pa) led the Anchormen with a win at 149 pounds to improve his record to a team-best 12-1.
Plymouth State returns to competition this Saturday at the Ted Reese Invitational hosted by the University of Southern Maine. RIC will face Western New England College on Friday, Dec. 11.
