SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Plymouth State University wrestling team won three straight matches Sunday afternoon after a first-round loss and ended up in ninth place at the New England Dual Meet Championships, hosted by Springfield College.
The Panthers, seeded 10th in the 15-team affair, were defeated by seventh-seeded University of Southern Maine, 25-13, in the first round of the day. PSU came back with victories over MIT (33-12), Western New England College (25-17) and Trinity College (38-12) to finish 3-1 in the tournament. Plymouth State is now 6-7 in dual meets on the season.
Williams College captured the team title, receiving a bye and then defeating Bridgewater State, Rhode Island College and Johnson & Wales University in the title match. Wesleyan defeated RIC in the third-place match, and Springfield knocked off Roger Williams in the fifth-place match-up.
Three Panther wrestlers won all four of their individual matches on the day - sophomore 125-pounder Josh Huber (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet), sophomore 157-pounder Mike Willey (Tewksbury, Mass.) and freshman 165-pounder Seth Carter (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne). Huber now has a team-best 20-3 record, while Willey is now 13-6 and Carter is 14-9.
Junior Rob Phillips (Brick, N.J.) and freshman Femi Wheeler (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) each won three of their four bouts for the Panthers, Phillips at 184 pounds and Wheeler at 149. Senior Fred Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y./Riverhead) won two of his three bouts at 125 pounds.
PSU travels to Pennsylvania next Saturday for a quad-meet at Wilkes University (11:00 a.m.)
