WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Plymouth State University wrestling team won its final match of the day over Gettysburg College Saturday, 34-10, to finish 1-2 in a quad meet hosted by Wilkes University.
The Panthers began the day with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked teams -- 45-0 to Kutztown University and 24-10 to host Wilkes, before finishing with the win over Gettysburg. PSU is now 7-9 in dual meets this season. Kutztown is 13-3 and ranked 15th in the Division II national poll and Wilkes is 21-5 and ranked 15th in the Division III national poll.
Sophomore 125-pounder Josh Huber (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet), senior Freddie Wilkinson (Quogue, N.Y./Riverhead) at 133 pounds and freshman Seth Carter (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) at 165 pounds were double winners for PSU, each winning bouts against Wilkes and Gettysburg. Huber increased his team-leading record to 22-4 while Wilkinson is now 18-7 and Carter 16-10.
Sophomore Jake Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) also picked up a victory for PSU at 285 pounds against Wilkes, and four other Panthers earned wins against Gettysburg - junior Pat Cassella (Merrimack, N.H.) at 141 pounds, freshman Femi Wheeler (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) at 149, freshman James Matlack (Hamilton, N.J.) at 157, and junior Eric Larcomb (Jefferson, N.H.) at 197.
Plymouth State will wrap up the regular season next Saturday at a quad meet at Springfield College that also includes Trinity College and Johnson & Wales University.
