PSU Wrestling downs Norwich in season opener
Panthers capture nine of 10 bouts vs. Cadets
NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team won nine out of 10 matches Wednesday evening to defeat Norwich University, 34-6, in the Panthers’ season opener at Norwich’s Andrews Hall.
Sophomore Seth Carter (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) and junior Josh Huber (Hampton, N.H./Winnacunnet) led the Panthers with wins by fall, Carter at 174 pounds and Huber at 125. Carter is ranked fourth in New England at his weight class, and Huber is ranked second in his division.
Sandwiched between Carter’s and Huber’s victories were consecutive Panthers wins by senior Rob Phillips (Brick, N.J.) at 184 pounds, senior Eric Larcomb (Jefferson, N.H./White Mountain Regional) at 197, and junior Jake Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) in the heavyweight division. Also posting victories for the Panthers were sophomore James Matlack (Hamilton, N.J.) at 157, freshman Mike Trask (Merrimack, N.H.) at 133 pounds, sophomore Femi Wheeler (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) at 141, and sophomore Travis Brooks (Beachwood, N.J.) at 149.
The Panthers, ranked eighth in New England, will be back on the mat this Saturday along with 10 other New England schools at the annual Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College.
