PSU Wrestlers compete at Plymouth State Open
Three Panthers win titles, four finish runner-up
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Three Plymouth State University wrestlers captured individual championships and four others finished runner-up Saturday afternoon as the Panthers hosted the Plymouth State University Open Wrestling Tournament at Foley Gymnasium. There was no team scoring kept in the all-day event.
The Panther individual champions included senior Dan Saia (Merrimack, N.H.) at 149 pounds, junior Mike Willey (Tewksbury, Mass.) at 157, and junior Rob Phillips (Brick, N.J.) at 184. The four Panthers who finished runner-up were freshman Mike Trask (Merrimack, N.H.) at 133, sophomore Femi Wheeler (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) at 141, sophomore Travis Brooks (Beachwood, N.J.) at 157, and sophomore Seth Carter (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) at 174.
Saia was one of four Panther senior wrestlers who were competing at home for the final time in their careers; Eric Bergeron (Meriden, Conn.) at 125, Pat Cassella (Merrimack, N.H.) at 141 and Eric Larcomb (Jefferson, N.H.) at 197 were the other three. Bergeron and Cassella both finished in third place in their weight classes.
The Panthers will now break for final exams and the holidays. PSU will be back on the mat on Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Roger Williams Invitational in Bristol, R.I.
