Gagnon goes 3-0 as Panthers rest five starters
WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team dropped all three matches Saturday afternoon at a quad-meet hosted by Williams College.
PSU, ranked third in New England, dropped their first match of the day to the top-ranked team in New England, Wesleyan University, 39-4. The Panthers fell to Oneonta State (N.Y.) in the middle match, 30-18, and wrapped up the day with a 26-18 setback to Williams, which is ranked fourth in New England. The Panthers are now 8-4 on the season, while Williams is 10-7-1, Wesleyan is 15-3-1, and Oneonta State is 11-7-1.
With the New England Championships coming up later this month, PSU took the opportunity to rest five of its 10 starters for the day.
Junior Jake Gagnon (Manchester, N.H./Memorial) led the way for PSU with three victories on the afternoon in the heavyweight divisison. Gagnon, who is ranked sixth in New England in his weight class, improved his record to 14-4 with the three wins, including a decision over Williams’ Tom Foote, who is ranked third in New England.
Sophomore Seth Carter (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) won both of his bouts at 174 pounds for PSU. Carter, who is ranked third in New England at 174, improved his record to a team-leading 19-5. Sophomore 165-pounder James Matlack (Hamilton, N.J.) and junior 184-pounder Rob Phillips (Brick, N.J.) each won two of three bouts on the day for the Panthers.
Plymouth State will conclude the dual meet season next Saturday with a tri-meet at Johnson & Wales University with Springfield College. The New England Championships are Feb. 26-27 at Trinity College.
