Panthers tune up for New England Championships
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Johnson & Wales University wrestling team swept a tri-match with Plymouth State and Springfield at the Harborside Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon. JWU posted a perfect 2-0 mark while Springfield was 1-1 and Plymouth State was 0-2 for the afternoon.
The day opened with a 42-3 victory by Springfield against Plymouth State. The Pride won nine of the 10 matches, including three via pin fall. The lone winner for the Panthers was junior Mike Willey (Tewksbury, Mass.), who won by decision at 157 pounds.
In the second contest of the day, JWU posted a 24-15 win against Plymouth State. Each team won five bouts apiece but the Wildcats won on the strength of two pins, a technical fall and a major decision. Willey won his second bout of the day for PSU, and was joined in the win column by senior Eric Bergeron (Meriden, Conn.) at 133 pounds, sophomore Femi Wheeler (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) at 141, sophomore Travis Brooks (Beachwood, N.J.) at 165, and sophomore Seth Carter (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne) at 174.
JWU defeated Springfield in the final match of the day, 24-19. After the day of competition, Johnson & Wales is now 14-6-1 while Springfield is 12-6 and PSU completes the duals with an 8-6 mark for the season.
Plymouth State is now idle until competing in the New England Championships on Feb. 26-27 at Trinity College.
