Gagnon, Phillips lead Panthers with three wins each
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team faced some of the top competition in the country Saturday, and finished with a 1-3 record in four matches at the John Reese Duals, hosted by Wilkes University.
The Panthers suffered a 26-13 defeat in their first match against Cortland State, which is ranked 10th in the latest Division III national poll. PSU picked up its first victory in the second match with a 21-19 triumph over King's College (Pa.), also marking the first career win for PSU head coach Matt Eldredge. The Panthers were downed 27-9 in the third match against Oneonta State, and took a 33-15 defeat in the final match against Wilkes, which is ranked 12th in the latest national poll.
Junior Jake Gagnon and senior Rob Phillips led the Panthers with three individual wins apiece. Gagnon went 3-0 in the heavyweight division with three decisions, and Phillips finished 3-1 at 184 pounds.
Juniors Cody Oliverio and James Matlack each posted 2-1 records for the Panthers. Oliverio earned a decision at both 149 and 157 pounds and Matlack won twice at 165, including a pin in his bout against King's. Six other Panthers won one match on the day.
PSU returns home to host its only home match of the season this Wednesday, Nov. 16, against Norwich University at Foley Gymnasium (7:00 p.m.)
