PSU Wrestlers finish 1-2 at Wesleyan Quad
Willey wins all three matches to lead Panthers
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Senior Mike Willey won all three of his bouts Saturday afternoon as the Plymouth State University wrestling team posted a 1-2 record in a quad-meet hosted by Wesleyan University.
The Panthers sandwiched a 28-15 victory over Williams College between a 33-13 loss to Oneonta State (N.Y.) and a 35-10 setback to host Wesleyan. PSU is now 5-13 in dual meets, while Wesleyan is 10-6, Oneonta is 9-9 and Williams is 4-12,
Willey, the defending New England champion at 157 pounds, won all three matches Saturday in his current weight class, 149. Willey improved his season record to 17-3 and his career mark to 81-23.
Junior Femi Wheeler, freshman Brandon Conrad and senior Dan Curley won two bouts apiece for the Panthers. Wheeler went 2-1 at 157 pounds to improve his season mark to 17-5, while Conrad won both his matches at 165 and Curley did the same at 174. Senior Rob Phillips went 1-1 at 184 and owns a team-best record of 24-8.
PSU earned its only victory on the day against Williams, as Curley and fellow seniors Jimmy Tarpey and Zac Giovanetti recorded wins by fall and Willey, Wheeler and sophomore Alex Cronin earned decisions.
Plymouth State will return to Wesleyan in two weeks for the annual New England Wrestling Association Championships. The Panthers will have the challenge of matching last year's tie for fourth place finish.
