Wheeler, Matlack, Snyder are place-winners for Panthers
GORHAM, Maine – The Plymouth State University wrestling team had three place-winners and finished in sixth place out of nine teams Saturday at the annual Ted Reese Invitational at the University of Southern Maine.
New York University captured the team title with 94 points, just two points ahead of runner-up Southern Maine (92). Western New England University took third with 80.5 points, followed by Trinity College (79), Springfield Tech (64), PSU (53), MIT (41), UNH (25) and RPI (17).
Senior Femi Wheeler (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) led the way for PSU, capturing the 157-pound bracket with three straight victories. Senior James Matlack (Ewing, N.J.) won three out of his four matches at 165 pounds and finished in third place, and sophomore Tyler Snyder (Elizabethville, Pa.) ended up in fourth place at 285 after posting a pair of back-draw pins.
Freshman Chris Perrault (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) had a strong tourney for PSU, winning three back-draw matches and four bouts overall at 174 pounds and finishing one victory shy of becoming a place-winner. Sophomore Justtin Demers (Concord, Mass.) also won three matches at 174 for PSU.
PSU has completed competition for the first semester and will be back on the mat at the Scott Viera Invitational at Roger Williams University on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013.
