PSU Wrestling drops three at NEWA Dual Meet Champ.
Brooks named All-Tournament for Panthers
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Plymouth State University wrestling team dropped three matches Sunday and finished in 14th place at the annual New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Championships, hosted by Johnson & Wales University.
The 14th-seeded Panthers were defeated by third-seeded and eventual champion Springfield College in the first round, 48-9. PSU was downed by 11th-seeded Western New England University in the consolation round, 44-12, and finished the day with a 39-13 setback to 13th-seeded Bridgewater State University.
Junior Travis Brooks (Beachwood, N.J.) posted the top performance on the day for Plymouth State, and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Brooks went 2-0 in his two bouts at 174 pounds, including a decision against Springfield and a pin against Western New England. Brooks is now 6-3 this season.
Freshman Chris Perrault (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) also collected two wins for the Panthers at 184 pounds. He won both bouts by fall against Springfield and WNE but lost a decision vs. BSU. Perrault improved to 12-8 this season, the most wins on the team. Sophomore Taylor Lozier (Barre, Vt.) and freshman Caleb Hall (Dixfield, Maine) also recorded victories against Bridgewater State at 174 and 141 pounds, respectively.
The Panthers will be home for their next matches this Sunday, Feb. 3, with a tri-match vs. the University of Southern Maine and WPI at Foley Gymnasium (11:00 a.m.). USM and WPI will meet first, followed by USM-PSU and ending with WPI-PSU.
