PSU Wrestling falls to #11 Springfield
Cronin, Perrault post wins for Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Springfield College captured eight of the 10 bouts Sunday afternoon en route to a 41-6 victory over Plymouth State University in a Division III collegiate wrestling match at Foley Gym.
The Pride, ranked #1 in New England and #11 nationally, won their 12th straight match to improve to 12-2 overall, while PSU falls to 0-10.
PSU had two winners – junior Alex Cronin (Merrimack, N.H.) at 133 pounds and freshman Chris Perrault (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) at 184. Perrault edged Springfield senior Nick Camera (North Massapequa, N.Y.), 3-2, who was ranked fourth at 184 in the latest New England poll. Perrault leads the Panthers in victories this season with a 14-10 record.
Springfield posted four wins by fall against the Panthers – freshman Mark Pinto (Milford, Mass.) at 141 pounds, sophomore Dylan Foley (Southborough, Mass.) at 149, senior Derrick Longo (Ardsley, N.Y.) at 165, and graduate student John Gabordi (Ledyard, Conn.) at 285. Longo and Gabordi are both ranked #1 in New England in their weight class. The Pride also got major decisions from junior James Coutoumas (Waltham, Mass.) at 174 pounds and freshman David Dubin (Holliston, Mass.) at 197 and a forfeit win at 125 from junior Tom Casper (Bergenfield, N.J.)
Also winning for the Pride was sophomore Eric Hamrick (Collingswood, N.J.) at 157 pounds, who handed PSU senior Femi Wheeler (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) just his second loss (13-2) of the season. Wheeler was tied for first in the latest New England rankings at 157 while Hamrick was ranked third.
Springfield wrestles again next Saturday at Williams College while PSU is idle until sending the starters to compete at the NCAA Northeast Regionals on March 2-3 at WPI in Worcester, Mass.
