Panthers earn success in debut of head coach Ryan Schieding
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Plymouth State University wrestling season got off to a solid start Saturday afternoon as the Panthers swept dual matches from Western New England University, 27-15, Middlesex Community College (N.J.), 28-20, and Springfield Tech, 41-16.
The outcome marks a successful debut for Panther head coach Ryan Schieding, who is in his first season at the helm. All team and individual results will officially count on PSU's record since the matches were conducted under NCAA weigh-in and match rules.
Sophomores Chris Perreault (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.), Hunter Fogarty (Arlington, Mass.) and Ray Welch (Rochester, N.Y.) led the Panthers with individual victories in all three matches, although each only had the wrestle twice while receiving a forfeit win. Perrault won his bouts at 197 pounds, including one by fall, Fogarty was 3-0 at 157 pounds with a pair of pins, and Welch was perfect at 165, including two wins by fall.
Juniors Alex Gerhold (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton) and Taylor Lozier (Barre, Vt.) also made successful debuts to the season, finishing with 2-1 records. Gerhold won two of three at 149 pounds with one win by fall, and Lozier did the same at 184. Junior James Zupko (Bennington, Vt.) picked up two wins at 174 pounds, one by fall.
Also earning spots in PSU's starting line-up were freshman Jared Ballew (Largo, Fla.) at 133 pounds, senior Fred Reisch (Norwalk, Conn.) at 141 pounds, and senior Tyler Snyder (Elizabethville, Pa.) in the heavyweight division.
PSU will be on the mat this Wednesday evening when the Panthers host Norwich University at 7:00 p.m. at Foley Gymnasium in the only home match of the 2013-14 season.
