Welch, Perreault post wins for Panthers
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Senior 285-pounder Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, N.H.), classmate 133-pounder Silas Murray (Brentwood, N.Y.) and freshman 197-pounder John Georges (Cranston, R.I.) each recorded pins Friday night as the Rhode Island College wrestling team knocked off Plymouth State University, 36-6, in the home opener at the RIC Recreation Center.
Murray opened the action in the 133-pound match for RIC (4-1) with a pin at the 2:59 mark to give the Anchormen an early 6-0 lead. After back-to-back forfeits gave the hosts an 18-0 advantage, the Panthers bounced back to cut into the deficit as Welch won at 155 pounds to put PSU on the board.
Rhode Island College added to the margin after sophomore Brandon Conrad (East Bridgewater, Mass.) earned a 7-3 decision at 165 lbs. The Anchormen jumped ahead of the Panthers, 24-3, thanks to junior Rob Sotelo's (Little Falls, N.J.) 8-6 decision at 174 lbs.
Plymouth State responded with a 3-2 victory in a battle of ranked wrestlers at 184 lbs. Perrault, who is ranked No. 4 in New England, held off junior Kyle Humphries (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who is ranked No. 5 in New England, for the one-point decision.
Georges and Nicoll closed out the match in style for the Anchormen, as the duo posted pins at 197 lbs. and 285 lbs., respectively.
PSU is now idle for final exams and the holiday break. The Panthers will be back on the mats on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the Williams College Invitational.
