Welch, Callahan provide Panther highlights with two wins each
GORHAM, Maine – The Plymouth State University wrestling team dropped a pair of matches Saturday afternoon, falling to Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 40-15, and the University of Southern Maine, 37-12, in an intercollegiate tri-match at USM.
Sophomore Ray Welch (Rochester, N.Y.) and freshman Clay Callahan (Milford, Conn.) were the top performers for Plymouth State. Welch and Callahan recorded consecutive pins at 157 and 165 pounds, respectively, over WPI's Tanner Burke and Torin Zonfrelli, who are both ranked sixth in New England in their respective weight classes. Welch and Callahan both came back with winning decisions against Southern Maine. Welch improved his record to 15-2 and Callahan to 12-6.
PSU sophomore Chris Perreault (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) had his nine-match winning streak stopped in a key bout against Southern Maine's Jonathan Deupree at 184. Perreault, who is ranked fourth in New England, picked up a win by decision against WPI but dropped a 7-6 decision to Deupree, who is ranked third in New England. Perreault is now 21-4 this season, including two losses to Deupree.
Freshman Chad Brouillet (Bennington, N.H.) also posted a win by fall for PSU at 174 pounds against Southern Maine.
The Panthers will wrestle in a quad-meet next Saturday at Springfield College with Trinity College and Johnson & Wales University.
