Callahan and Aumann are place-winners for Panthers
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Junior Clay Callahan (Milford, Conn.) and freshman Joey Aumann (Hopatcong, N.J.) were individual place-winners Saturday to lead the Plymouth State University wrestling team to an 11th place finish at the annual Doug Parker Invitational, hosted by Springfield College.
Stevens Institute of Technology won the event with 162 points, ahead of runner-up Williams (139) and third-place Springfield (127). PSU placed 11th with 42 points, behind 10th place University of Southern Maine (57) and ahead of 12th place American International (35.5).
Callahan and Aumann both placed sixth in their respective weight classes, Callahan at 165 pounds and Aumann at 125. Callahan won his first three bouts to reach the semifinals, but dropped three in a row to finish sixth in the bracket. Aumann won his first two bouts before his first loss, then won two matches in the back draw before going down to defeat in the fifth-place bout.
Three Panther wrestlers also won two bouts apiece before being knocked out of the double-elimination event. Freshman Greg Zaw (Sandwich, Mass.) won a pair of back-draw matches at 133 pounds; sophomore Nick Simeti (Pearl River, N.Y.) won twice, including one by fall, at 149 pounds; and freshman Matt Froio (Cohasset, Mass.) won twice at 174, including one by forfeit.
The Panthers return to the mat on Satuday, Dec. 5, at the annual Ted Reese Invitational, hosted by Southern Maine.
